Michelle and I were so excited to get a rare night out together to watch the critically acclaimed Broadway musical The Band’s Visit at Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

“The Band’s Visit is one of four musicals in Broadway history to win the unofficial “Big Six” Tony Awards®, which include Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Actress in a Musical, and Best Direction of a Musical. [It] tells a joyful, offbeat story of a band of musicians who arrive in a town way off the beaten path. Under the spell of the desert sky, with beautiful music perfuming the air, the band brings the town to life in unexpected ways.” (Segerstrom Center for the Arts, February 21, 2022)

Different from the large scale musical productions I’ve often seen at the Center, I found myself rather moved by the slow pace and silent pauses that told a story within themselves.  The acting was incredible, the music moving, and the story sad, heartwarming and comical all at once.  After the bows, do yourself a favor and stay seated to watch “The Band” perform one more time –  I was mesmerized by their hands and their manipulations of their instruments – spectacular!

Michelle says if you’re looking to be transplanted to a small Israeli town for the evening then this musical is for you. Describing it as light, comical, dramatic, and sweet with beautiful music to make you feel all the feels, she says it’s perfect for an evening out (a 1 hr 43 min show without an intermission).  She too loved the ending that takes you right back to the beginning and leaves you wanting more!
